What we check on a flash unit before it goes online – and what we don’t.

Example photo: Blitzgeräte Metz 52 AF-1 digital, von vorn, with dots at the points we check. The checks are also listed as text on this page.

What we check

  • Firing: the flash fires reliably
  • Charging behavior: the unit charges and is ready to use again
  • Battery compartment: visual inspection for corrosion

What we don’t check

  • The guide number and actual light output
  • Compatibility with a specific camera or its automatic settings
  • The firing voltage

A note on firing voltage that may be important: Some older flashes operate at high voltages that can damage modern digital cameras. Check this before using it with a digital camera.
